Weather and Climate for Educators
2014 Professional Development Series for Teachers

course

Weather, climate, and climate change are important topics in today's society. Many science educators are expected to teach these subjects even with no formal training in these areas. Our Weather and Climate for Teachers course, sponsored by CMMAP and the Little Shop of Physics.

The intent of these courses was to provide college-level content on the physics of the atmosphere, weather, climate, climate change, and climate modeling as well as demonstrate activities for use in the classroom. The courses were taught using the method of the Five E's, each describing a phase of learning (engage, explore, explain, extend, and evaluate).

Participants received one graduate course credit at CSU and a box of science tools to use in their classrooms. More importantly, participants left the courses with the confidence and knowledge to teach their students about weather, climate, and climate change.

In 2014 we offered three courses in our professional development series:
  • The Science of Weather and Climate
  • Weather and Climate Across the Globe
  • Climate Change: Past and Future

The Science of Weather and Climate
This 3 day course was intended for elementary/middle school teachers and was held on the CSU main campus at the home of Little Shop of Physics July 9-11. Participants learned about the scientific principles that underly our planet's weather and climate.

Weather and Climate Across the Globe
Intended for middle/high school teachers, our second 3 day course was held at CMMAP on the CSU Foothills Campus July 14-16. This was an in depth course on weather and climate. It aided educators of earth systems science who were looking to extend and solidify their knowledge of weather and climate concepts.

Climate Change: Past and Future
Climate has changed both slowly and suddenly over and over through geologic time. This two-day course held at CMMAP on the CSU Foothills Campus July 17-18 studied these changes in depth and was intended for middle and high school teachers of earth systems science who were looking to extend and solidify their knowledge of climate and climate change.
